What is email verification?
Email verification is the process of confirming that an email address is correctly formatted, that its domain can receive mail, and that the specific mailbox exists — before you send to it. A verification service performs these checks in order and returns a status per address, so invalid ones can be removed from a list rather than bounced in a campaign.
The reason it matters is bounce rate. Mailbox providers read a high hard-bounce rate as evidence that a sender does not maintain their list, and they act on it by filtering future mail. Verification is the cheapest place to fix that, and it works alongside SPF, DKIM and DMARC authentication and a sensible sending volume ramp.

Syntax and format validation
The address is parsed against RFC rules — malformed local parts, bad characters, and over-length domains are rejected before any network call.
Domain and MX record lookup
We resolve the domain’s mail servers. No MX, a null MX (RFC 7505), or a parked domain means the address cannot receive mail at all.
Provider-specific rules
Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo each enforce their own local-part rules. An address that breaks them cannot exist there, no mail server connection required.
Risk screening
The address is checked against disposable domains, role accounts, known spamtrap patterns, and common domain typos such as gmial.com.

It removes one of the largest causes. Mailbox providers treat a high hard-bounce rate as a signal that a sender does not maintain their list, and that damages the reputation of your domain and IP. Verification is necessary but not sufficient — authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) and sending volume matter too.
A catch-all domain accepts mail for every address at that domain, whether or not the mailbox exists, so SMTP verification cannot prove a specific mailbox is real. Pingovo detects catch-all domains and reports those addresses as risky rather than claiming they are valid.
